Crash Course In The History Of Japanese Tattooing

If you think about Japanese tattoos as a mark of an ancient culture, you're wrong.

Contrary to popular belief, they have reached their zenith in the 18th century century. This unfortunately means that the samurai never had tattoos. They are still fresh, but because they had strange hairstyles and they used to chop off members.

Of course, there's a legitimate question. What makes these damn tattoos so special anyway. The Horimono Irezumi or tattoos, as known at the time were very different in concept from their Western counterparts. Were more or less almost like paintings depicting scenes with the gods, which became popular at this time. The folly of all, probably would have come by chance or rather forced Japan has finally decided to end its isolation. This means that Japanese tattoos have begun to spread like wildfire in the western world.

Military Tattoo Designs

Recent studies show that every real soldier (It does to bees in the National Guard) who fired his rifle only once even thought about getting a tattoo. This is a global phenomenon.

Only a few decades ago the men who have had things like eagles, guns or skulls on your skin. Today, due to recent events in the world, we are witnessing radical new designs.

For example, it is very likely that you see the "goats" to remember those brave soldiers and how they are stored in the herd in a remote Afghan village of "doves" for those tasks where they kept some of the tribes of the meat processing capacity than any other (I know technically they were pigeons, but the shades of white and very hard to get).

celtic tattoo ideas

In this section of the article, we will give you a glimpse of different Celtic symbols, and what they mean. According to their size, we have put forth ideas about which part of your body, these tattoos will look best on. Before we begin with which tattoo goes where, let us get to know a little about the basis that forms typical Celtic tattoo designs. The Celts attempted to contrive symbols, which would stand for unity. In this attempt, they made crosses, knots, interlaces, etc. all in one fluid motion, without lifting the instrument used to draw them. The single motion was made to symbolize persistence and endurance in life

When getting a tattoo you should have a clear idea as to which part of your body you want to tattoo. A tattoo is a symbol of the person's aspirations and nature, so choose a design that suits your characteristics and aims. Last, but not least, decide a color combination for your tattoo, if you are getting a color tattoo. While choosing color it's important that you take into consideration the design and the skin tone of the body part you wish to tattoo. If you are considering to get a wolf tattoo

Vanessa Hessler Biography: Take one look at Vanessa Hessler and you'll immediately understand why the statuesque beauty has been compared favorably to Swedish actress Anita Ekberg. Born in Rome on January 21, 1988 to an Italian mother and an American father, Vanessa has spent much of her life modeling. Although only 18, Vanessa has already appeared in ads for Calvin Klein and Giorgio Armani, and has done runway work for Fendi and Gattinoni. She has worked with celebrities like Claudia Schiffer, and her gorgeous face has graced the covers of TV Spielfilm in Germany and GQ in Italy. In fact, Vanessa is just about everywhere you go in Italy, thanks to a wide-ranging series of promotional ads and billboards. We're sure no one has any complaints about her attempt to single-handedly keep the country beautiful. More than just another pretty face, Vanessa made her big-screen debut in 2005 in the Italian madcap comedy Natale a Miami. The story of two men who flee to Florida for Christmas after being dumped by their wives was such a hit in Italy that it outgrossed King Kong and The Chronicles of Narnia in its opening weekend. Although it is unlikely to do much business beyond Italy, the film has helped make Vanessa a star in her homeland thanks to her hilarious role as an underage nympho.

Grand Central Art Center

*Parking available in the Third Street parking structure

Cal State University’s cutting-edge museum arm, Grand Central Art Center, and Nathan Spoor have teamed up to present one hell of a show in the form of ‘Suggestivism’ – a comprehensive survey that explores and documents a select section of modern contemporary artists which make up the vibrant core of creativity existing in the current art world.

Conceptually speaking, the term “suggestivism” refers to the ability of an individual to pursue their purpose with an amplified understanding and sensitivity. The artists involved represent precisely this – a wave of purpose, working within the more fluid aspects of narrative or figurative arenas. Through thower of suggestion, the magic is transferred from one to another, engaging the world at large from the most vivid and evocative of visual realms.

Featuring works from:
Esao Andrews, Carrie Ann Baade, Sandow Birk, Michael Brown, Nicoletta Ceccoli, Dave Cooper, Bob Dob, Thomas Doyle, Ron English, Alex Gross, Robert Hardgrave, Naoto Hattori, Femke Hiemstra, Gregory Jacobsen, Audrey Kawasaki, Andy Kehoe, Kris Kuksi, Darren LeGallo, Kris Lewis, Francesco LoCastro, Jason Maloney, Mars-1/Mario Martinez. Chris Mars, Dalek James Marshall, Dan May, Elizabeth McGrath, Jeff McMillan, Tara McPherson, Mia, David Molesky, Brendan Monroe, Scott Musgrove, Nathan Ota, Michael Page, Kevin Peterson, James Roper, Chris Ryniak, Bob Schneider, Todd Schorr, Greg Simkins, Skinner, Jeff Soto, Nathan Spoor, CR Stecyk III, Heidi Taillefer, Joe Vaux, Nicola Verlato, Oliver Vernon, Eric White, Robin Williams, Martin Wittfooth, Chandler Wood, and Chet Zar

The exhibition will be accompanied by a grand print / book piece that includes the artwork in the exhibition, as well as a fascinating time capsule of studio shots and compelling interviews conducted by Spoor with each artist during the three-year curating period (2008 – 2011).

Japanese Tattoo Designs

Trendy Japanese Tattoo Designs 2010/2011
When a country has conjured-up one of the most amazing styles of body art around, how on earth can it be so idiotic as to ban it? This is a question that tattoo enthusiasts have been deliberating over for a number of decades now, but luckily for us, this style has broken out of the Far East and has made it to our shores.

Japanese tattoo designs really do make for some of the most impressive pieces of body art you are ever likely to see; Fact! The use of color and black and grey shading will grab anyone's attention and as this style is so versatile, it will look great when applied to any part of the body.

One of the main central themes is dragons. These legendary beasts always include very detailed work: literally down to the last scale on the dragon's body. The dragons will often be colored with very vibrant shades which will then be surrounded by plenty of panelling or swirls. A black background helps to make the central feature stand out.

Other popular features include Geisha girls and coy fish. Coy fish look especially great as a forearm piece and are even more effective when surrounded by Japanese wave patterns. Include some water lilies within this design and you will have a fashionable and awesome Japanese piece to treasure.

Traditionally, before the style of tattooing was banned in Japan, body art was often taken to the extreme of a complete body suit. As it is becoming more and more acceptable to get heavily tattooed today, many people turn to these styles for extensive work.

Japanese designs are very masculine in appearance and usually make for the best larger pieces. They can be found as smaller designs and always look better on men. If you are looking for a feminine piece, it is usually a good idea to dispense with the extensive background panelling.  John S Clifford

Almost every culture, across the world has their own set of traditions when it comes to marriages, weddings, and celebrations. Irish culture holds the Celtic tattoos with significant value, which is why they incorporated its meaning into their daily lives. As these tattoos have no beginning or end, Celtic loops, knots, and other designs are the perfect symbol of togetherness and forever. Which is why Celtic wedding tattoos are popular and often used instead of the traditional wedding rings. Although, many Irish people choose to wear traditional rings, the Celtic wedding tattoos have been one way of binding a couple's marriage, expressing their culture and heritage, and bringing in some kind of creativity to the whole wedding.

Any traditional wedding has the couple choosing and exchanging wedding rings for the ceremony. To keep the tradition alive but also adding their own unique twist to it, some newlyweds are adding that extra creativity to the whole thing. Getting wedding band tattoos inked on themselves, to show their love for one another. Plus, an added advantage of getting your wedding ring tattooed on yourself is, you won't ever lose it.

When you decide to spend the rest of your life with your true love, everything else seems unimportant somehow. You wish to display your love for him/her and make a statement about it. What could be more bigger, louder, and permanent than a wedding tattoo? When the two of you bond on a level where no one can even imagine, it makes your relationship stronger than ever. And as a permanent reminder of that person, relationship, date, and/or place, you can get matching wedding tattoos done.
  • Linked Rings: The linking of two wedding bands, on your ring finger, symbolizes your eternal and undying love for one another. The design shows unity and infinity all mixed in one. A union of two souls that can never break by making the design with endless Celtic knots.
  • Name/Initials: One of the most popular kind of wedding tattoos is the name or initials tattoo. The names/initials go on each other's body, exactly on the same spot, and in the same font, size, style, and shape.
  • Wedding Bells: As the wedding bells have always been associated with the end of the wedding ceremony, the tattoo will preserve your union. You can get the wedding date inked in the middle of the bells and enhance it with elegant knot work.

Apart from the Celtic wedding tattoos, another popular culture also adopts the heritage of applying tattoos for wedding; India. Unlike other cultures, weddings in India are held on a grand scale as they have to follow a number of rituals, customs, and traditions. As one the important rituals for Hindu weddings, the temporary wedding tattoos, also known as mehndi, are applied on the bride's hands and feet. It is believed that the henna wedding tattoos signify the strength of a bride's marriage and the love she will receive after it. The darker the color of the tattoo, the stronger and longer the marriage will be.

The henna tattoo design and pattern drawn on the hands and feet are very complicated. Although, the placement of these temporary wedding tattoos are not specified, as mentioned before, they are generally applied on the hands and feet. Nowadays, apart from the bride, the rest of the family and friends, and the groom (in some cultures) also get the privilege of applying henna on their hands. However, only the bride gets the special attention and the most unique, creative, and beautiful designs when it comes to it. The following are the most common and versatile wedding tattoo ideas that you can expect.
  • Baraat: In plain English, baraat means the marriage procession which comes from the groom's house, accompanied by his family and friends. This entire scenario is drawn on one of her arms with intricate designs to match it. The tattoo actually starts at the top of her arm and runs down to her palm.
  • Doli: Doli is the end of the wedding ceremony and now the bride has to go to her husband's home. The detailed work that is put into the design takes many hours and lot of skill. To match the baraat scene, the doli is drawn on the other arm.
  • Flowers: The flower patterns are included in the entire design. The choice of flowers to be drawn are many. You can go with roses, lotuses, rose buds, daisies, and many more. These flowers are interconnected with the rest of the designs on the hands and feet.
  • Kalash: A metal brass, copper, silver, or gold pot is used in many wedding ceremonies. It is used in the ceremony to worship many Gods and Goddesses in Indian culture. The design is very popular and often has the name of the groom imprinted inside it.
  • Peacock: A peacock tattoo looks really gorgeous when the wings are drawn open with flower patterns in it. The henna tattoo artist makes sure that the designs are complex, yet beautiful.
