I'm honored to have such a fine group of artists contribute to their talent to the INLE exhibit I'm curating at Gallery: 1988: LA on March 11th. Who or what is INLE? In 1974, Richard Adam's wrote the beloved classic "Watership Down". It is a tale about overcoming the obstacles of life that try to beat you into submission and coming out on top, told through the unlikely embodiment of rabbits. Upon reading the book at a young age, one particular thread stood out to me. The story of "The Black Rabbit of Inle". It was on page 280 of this book that my Grandfather had gotten for me on a road trip that the story of Inle´ unfolds. The fear he induced in the rabbits who told tales of him is not much unlike our own fears of death and what is unknown. I always questioned was their fear based upon him or the inevitability of their own demise, and was it something to fear or welcome after a long life lived? With this book began my over 24 year obsession with using rabbits as a tool in my art. Upon relating my memories of this book with some artist friends of mine, I wasn't surprised to find they had similar attachments to the story and subsequent movie and that it too was a huge influence on their work. The question is asked over and over "what inspires you and your art?". Well here is one aspect, and In my attempt to keep this story alive and in honor of Richard Adam's timeless story we are proud to present "INLE". -Greg "Craola" Simkins

Swallow Tattoo Design

Swallow - The swallow, like the bluebird, is a symbol of hope. As a nautical tattoo design, the swallow has been sometimes mistaken within popular culture for the bluebird, and the two very different species of birds - the Barn Swallow and eastern Bluebird, to be exact - have quite similar colouring, with bright accents of blue and and orange, verging to both red and yellow.


In ancient times, the swallow was associated with the 'imperishable' stars and the souls of the dead. According to Greek legend, secret texts told how to transform into a swallow, something the ancient deities liked to do. It was also a totem bird for sorrowing mothers who had lost a child. To kill a swallow was very unlucky, as the swallow carried the souls of children who had died. An ancient Egyptian artwork depicts a swallow on the prow of a barque as it enters the Underworld.

Interestingly, both good luck and bad are attributed to the swallow. It heralds the coming of spring and happiness, poets praise it, and it appears on the flowering peach branch in classical Chinese painting. In Egyptian love poetry, the swallow sings of the first signs of a new love. For some, it's a symbol of fertility and renewal, a harbinger of good and a symbol of transformation. For the pilgrim to Mecca, the swallow is the symbol of constancy and faith, and is said to fly to that holy city each year. Swallows mate for life, and therefore represents fidelity and loyalty, but in Japan, it can be a symbol of unfaithfulness. Some legends warn of a swallow flying through the house, since it brings tidings of displeasure from the gods, and likely foreshadows bad luck. In China it symbolizes daring, danger and a change for good in the future.

For more than a century the swallow has been a favorite tattoo motif for sailors. It's often a sign that land is near. During migrations that can be thousands of miles in distance, swallows are known to travel far out to sea, but would alight on boats when close to land - a welcome sign for the sailor hoping for landfall. It's a tradition for sailors -- after logging 5,000 miles at sea -- to sport the swallow (or depending upon your belief, the bluebird) tattoo. Two swallows proclaims 10,000 sea miles. And a swallow with a dagger through its heart is a memorial for a friend lost at sea.

Scorpion Tattoos - Scorpion Tattoo Designs

Scorpions bring about a various array of emotions such as feelings of fear, awe or other strong emotions in people and due to this reason, they are chosen as powerful representations in the form of body tattoos. Being considered by many in a negative and positive light, they make up for controversial yet interesting body tattoos. A scorpion tattoo may be partial, complete, realistic or may have spiritual relations also. So thererfore they are pretty diverse in their applications which is why they are so popularly used in the tattoo business.

Tribal Scorpion: These are normally the popular choices for tattoos. They are represented by curvy lines or sharp points. An interesting feature of theirs is that they are able to represent the scorpion spiritually but refrain from arousing any fear that people normally associate with them.

Scorpion Parts: These sort of tattoos are drawn like a costume or a uniform with the various details of the anatomy of the arachnid tattooed all over the body. It could be the sharp claw drawn on the arm, the exoskeleton of the scorpion on the underbelly or the tail running right up to the back.

Scorpio: These are representative of the astrological importance and meaning of the arachnid. In these the symbol of the scorpion as they are represented in the horoscope can be drawn or it is sometimes also done by fusing the scorpion with the symbol of the Scorpio that is usually the symbol M. The personal traits of the scorpio as well as of the people born under this sign can also be written down in English or some foreign language.

Realistic: Realistic Tattoos are represented as line drawings or shading.The tattoo can also have colour too but it must have a shocking effect taking in consideration its entomological aspects.

Sleeve: This is represented by intricate yet beautiful designs on the arm or forearm where the scorpion is represented as interacting with the other elements one would like to have on their sleeves. The elements could be something related to the individuals or it could just complement the tattoo.It could be the scorpion fighting or standing on these elements.  Valerie Althorpe

Mid City Arts Mural and Signing!

Thanks so much to those of you who made it out to Mid City Arts/ 33Third on Saturday. I had a ton of great conversations and a great time meeting you all. Also thanks so much to my assistant Graham Curran who pulled so much weight helping get through the painting on Friday.
